the mayor of Castro street's background
In order to understand Harvey Milk's achievements and legacy, one must know his background. First, Harvey moved to San Francisco with his partner at the time, Scott Smith, where they opened a camera shop on Castro Street called Castro Camera. Most importantly, however, is that he was on the San Francisco Board of Supervisors for 11 months, until he was assassinated by another Board member, Dan White. However, this position took him three tries to achieve. He finally gained a spot the year George Moscone was elected mayor. After his first try for a place on the Board, the people on his street declared him "The Mayor of Castro Street," and, even though he lost, he gained popularity and support. He was able to win the election by inspiring people to come out and move to San Francisco after his first and second run for a place on the Board of Supervisors. This information about Harvey Milk sets the scene for his many achievements.
