minor achievements
Harvey Milk's actions for the rights of gays resulted in a myriad of accomplishments. For example, just the fact that he was able to gain a place on the San Francisco Board of Supervisors was a great achievement. More importantly, however, is what he did on the Board. First off, he started programs that benefited workers and the rights of the elderly. Also, he contributed to fixing neighborhood issues such as public transportation, police protection, public parks, and passing a law that required owners to clean up their dog's waste. Additionally, he pushed for more gay police officers, and succeeded. As for more major accomplishments, the first gay rights law in San Francisco was passed. Everyone on the Board except Dan White voted for this law to pass.

Harvey Milk pushed for Proposition 6 to not pass. If Proposition 6 had been passed, it would have prohibited gays to be teachers. John Briggs, a California senator, was the main supporter of what became known as the Briggs Initiative. Milk and Briggs had several debates over this issue, which, in the end, led to the repeal of Proposition 6. (Courtesy of San Francisco Bay Area Television Archive)
